Ultimate Guide to Supply Chain Management

Ultimate Guide to Supply Chain Management The supply chain is probably one of the more complex systems that all managers have to be knowledgeable about. Its broad coverage, which includes entire organizations, people, information, various activities and all other resources that play a role in the flow of products or services from producers to suppliers to customers to end users. This complexity, coupled with its dynamic nature, calls for a way to keep that flow going in such a way that facilitates and does not, in any way, hinder the operations of the business. This discipline is called supply chain management. © Shutterstock.com | TrueffelpixIn this article, well show 1) what supply chain management is all about, 2) which elements play an important role in supply chain management, 3) what activity levels SCM entails, 4) the major components of a supply chain management, as well as 5) some challenges in SCM.SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENTThe simplest definition of supply chain management, or SCM, as it is popularly known, is the “management of the flow of goods and services through interconnected or linked networks or channels, operating as if in a chain”. These goods may also refer not only to finished goods or final products, but also raw materials and work-in-process inventory. If we are going to be more technical about it, however, the definition of SCM would be the“design, planning, execution, control and monitoring of supply chain activities, with the objective of creating value, building a competitive infrastructure, leveraging worldwide logistics, synchronizing supply with demand, an d measuring performance on a global scale.”The application of SCM is also seen to be as complex as the network or chain that it manages, since it does not draw from one or two disciplines alone. It takes on an integrated approach that takes its cues from various areas or disciplines, such as procurement, operations management and logistics. Recent decades have also seen information technology figuring more and more into SCM.Ultimately, managing the supply chain will improve the visibility of inventory, and the velocity of its movement. To break it down, SCM is concerned with the management of:The flow of raw materials (from suppliers) into the organization, to be used in its operations; The process undergone by materials within the organization to turn it into finished goods; The flow of the resulting finished goods from the organization, through distribution channels, to arrive into the hands of the end user, customer or consumer.Businesses can benefit from SCM because, when done r ight, it can make supply chain more cost-effective and efficient. It will:Improve the supply chain networkMinimize delaysReduce costs and inefficienciesIncrease productivityPromote collaboration and enhance relationshipsBoost customer satisfactionAside from the above, SCM has also become an important business tool in the sense that it improves the relationship between the organization and its partners along the supply chain, which may include suppliers, distributors, and logistics operators.ELEMENTS OF SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENTBusiness experts have narrowed down the elements of SCM into four: demand management, effective communication, process integration, and collaboration.Demand managementThese involve activities that are used in predicting or forecasting the future demand for an organization’s products or services, so it could plan the flow of its manufacturing processes better.Just as supply and demand go together, so do supply management and demand management. The focus is not on the supply or even the production process, because the main concern is the customers: their needs and their preferences, as these will dictate the demand. Activities will be carried out in order to find out what the customers want or need and, in the process, make decisions that will put the company in a competitive advantage in the industry.Effective CommunicationBusinesses benefit a lot from effective communication, and the supply chain is no different. An organization has identified sources of demand and operational information, and it should ensure that the same information will be disseminated to all its members, especially those who are directly involved in the supply chain.By keeping the members of the organization apprised with the latest and correct information, they will also be reminded of their duties and responsibilities in the supply chain or network, so they can deliver what is expected of them. It also enables them to make the necessary adjustments, should there b e a need to do so.Business Process IntegrationBefore SCM, businesses were focused on managing the individual functions of workers and departments within the company. SCM changed that approach as it involves the integration of business processes, particularly the processes along the supply chain, in order to facilitate a continuous flow or movement of resources. In other words, SCM entailed collaboration and partnership between and among the players of business processes. It covers the relationship between the suppliers and the buyers, the product developers and end users, the systems in use that are common to the parties, and the information being shared or exchanged among them. Some of the identified processes in the supply chain that may be integrated include the following:Customer management: These processes involve customer relationship management and customer service management. The organization has to pay attention to its relationship with its customers or end users and, at the same time, become a reliable source of customer information, providing real-time information about its products and services, such as availability, logistics and other information that customers may be interested in.Manufacturing flow management: The predictive value of the demand management processes will enable the organization to produce and supply products and services more reliably and in a more flexible manner. Depending on the demand, the organization can make better decisions on matters related to its manufacturing processes, such as scheduling, batches or lot sizes, and work intervals.Procurement: Procurement is more than just the simple act of purchasing. There are a lot of details to pay attention to when obtaining raw materials and products from suppliers outside of the organization. These include actually sourcing for supplies by looking for suppliers, resource planning, assessing the need of supplies of the organization, placement of order, as well as the transport, ha ndling, storage and warehousing of the purchased supplies.Product development: One of the concerns of organizations is to shorten product life cycles, and one way of achieving that is to decrease the time to market these products. Thus, product development should also be integrated with customer service and customer relationship management.Inventory management: Businesses also have to maintain an inventory of their supplies or raw materials. After all, not all businesses adopt the Just-in-Time method of procuring inventory, where they will purchase supplies and receive them just as they are about to be placed in production. In most cases, companies maintain inventory or stock of these materials until such time that they will be needed in the manufacturing process. This is also part of SCM. Of course, inventory management processes also cover keeping track of their inventory of the finished goods that came out of the production process, awaiting delivery to the customers. Inventory m anagement will be conducted in order to keep the amount of wastage low, as well as the cost of storing inventory.Supplier relationship management: This is closely related to the procurement processes, because a huge part of being able to conduct procurement processes smoothly and more efficiently relies on the relationship of the organization with the suppliers or the providers of the materials that are being procured.Order management: There are separate processes for tracking orders from customers, assigning products to these orders, and scheduling the delivery of the orders to the customers.Distribution: This could also be termed as physical distribution, as it involves physically delivering a service or moving a product to the customer, with the use of an appropriate marketing channel.Relationship management through outsourcing: Reducing life cycles can also be accomplished by outsourcing key activities that used to be performed in-house. Examples of partners through outsourcing that an organization will closely be working with in the supply chain include transport and delivery service providers, and warehousing or storage agents.CollaborationThis is another key term in supply chain management, because much of the activities involve relationships: the relationship between top management and its people, between members of the organization particularly those who work in teams, and between the organization and its partners in the supply chain.Maintaining good relationships with suppliers, for instance, will increase the likelihood of reducing costs as well as provide a guarantee that the quality of the materials or products that they supply will be high. You may have seen companies remaining partners with certain suppliers for years â€" decades, even. There is a great probability that this is because they have excellent SCM, with focus on collaboration and partnerships.SCM LEVELS OF ACTIVITIESSCM involves a lot of activities that are all geared towards improvi ng the flow of materials through the supply chain. To make things easier, these activities have been grouped into three:1. StrategicThis involves decisions made by top management, and they encompass the issues that will affect the entire organization, not just a single department or unit. Examples are decisions on what sales market to penetrate, which suppliers or partners to collaborate with, and where to set up a major manufacturing plant or warehouse.Often, these decisions are made by top management.2. TacticalDecisions that are more focused on the financial side of things will fall under this category. The main concern will be in minimizing costs. For example, the company can enter into agreements with its distributors to conduct their activities in a more cost-efficient manner. It can also strike a deal with their warehousing partners to find ways to lower their cost of inventory storage.3. OperationalThese involve decisions that are made on a daily basis within the organizatio n, such as arranging and rearranging production schedules, taking orders from customers, transporting raw materials from storage to the production site, and moving finished goods from the production site to the warehouse. There are three main flows that are tackled in SCM.Product Flow: This was the simple definition of supply chain management, since it involves the movement of products or goods from a supplier to a customer. But it also includes the movement of products or goods from a customer that is returning them.Information Flow: This pertains to the flow of data or information â€" in real-time â€" on orders, availability of products, and the status of orders and the delivery thereof.Finances Flow: This covers all matters related to the financial side of the transactions, such as the pricing, the applicable credit terms, the payment schedules and terms. If there are consignment arrangements entered into, they will also belong to the finances flow.COMPONENTS OF SUPPLY CHAIN MANAG EMENTSCM has the following basic components:Planning and ControlAs in every other process, the first stage involves coming up with a plan or strategy on how the company’s product or service will meet the needs of its target customers or end users, while allowing the business to earn a profit. This involves taking into consideration all the resources that will be used in the manufacture and delivery of these products to the customers. It does not end there, either. Once a strategy has been developed, there is a need to monitor the supply chain and see to it that the plan is being followed.DevelopmentWe have reiterated how collaboration and partnerships play very important roles in SCM, and that is especially apparent in this stage. The organization has to build and maintain strong relationships with its raw materials suppliers and service providers. This covers identifying the suppliers that the organization feels most comfortable working with, and coming up with plans and agreements on pricing, shipping, delivery, and payment.ManufacturingThis is where the raw materials are placed into production to come up with the finished product, which will then undergo testing and packaging. The activities involved in this component include scheduling, resources allocation, finished goods inventory management, and quality control measures.DeliveryWe now come to the logistics. At this point, all the finished products that were packaged will now be brought along the distribution channels so they can reach the customers. It covers order receipt and fulfillment, warehousing, shipping and payment collection.Building strong relationships with carriers or transport companies that will handle the shipping and delivery processes will also fall under this component.ReturnPart of supply chain management is how the organization will handle when customers return defective products to the company, and find ways to deal with any potential negative effect of such returns. One of the strat egies in SCM to address returns-related issues is to set up a network that will be dedicated to receiving the defective products and providing assistance to customers who are returning these products, as well as responding to customers’ questions, if any.We can never take out the organization structure as one of the components of SCM, because they will have an effect on how SCM is carried out. We can further break that down into the following. The power and leadership structure. At the end of the day, it is the decision of top management that will prevail. They have the final decision on the conduct of SCM.The management methods or styles used. How the management runs or supervises the company will also affect how SCM is carried out.The overall organizational culture or attitude. Much of the corporate culture or attitude toward SCM will be dictated by those in power. It is a sad reality that, although the concept of the supply chain has been around for a very long time, there are s till many business that do not pay much attention to it.With the advancement of technology, SCM has become automated, thanks in large part to the many software applications or programs developed specifically for the management of supply chains. Of course, before choosing which program will work for your specific business, you still have to do your research.CHALLENGES TO SCMIf we are to name a disadvantage of SCM, it would be the huge amount of investment it requires, both in money, time, manpower, and other resources to plan, implement and monitor it. This is further aggravated by the fluctuating costs in the global market today.Today, businesses also have greater chances of bringing their operations global. The internet has certainly made it possible for companies to have a wider reach in terms of their target market. But this has also posed a challenge to the logistics because, when they used to think about their supply chain only within their state or country, now they have to ex pand it on an international or even global scale, too.Competition has also risen to a global scale, which means companies now have to pour more resources into ensuring that their supply chain or supply network can compete with that of their rivals. Again, this will go back to the issue of whether the company has enough resources to meet the required investment. Clearly, SCM does not come cheap. But with proper implementation, it can bring greater benefits.

This is followed by an argument that is ethical based on whether victimless crimes such as gambling, prostitution and use of drugs should be taken as criminal offenses. Thirdly, the paper discusses relativity of the morality. Lastly, this is followed by an example of an ethical dilemma faced and how I solved it. Important ethical dilemma in police, correction officials and prosecutors Firstly, one of the ethical dilemma changing the police and prosecutors is to adapt to the changing and dynamic social context around them. This is because most of them are exposed to numerous ethical conflicts when unaware and unprepared. Secondly, police, correction officers, and prosecutors are forced to go as per the flow that is potentially subjected to ethical risks. Consequently, they are left wondering whether to engage in mental preparation or not especially when carrying out the official duties. Thirdly, it is an ethical dilemma to report illegal activity committed by a fe llow officer working in the same department. Ethically, it would be important to report any misconduct committed by fellow workers; however, reporting a fellow worker is taken as a betrayal of people; yet, it is a career killer. Keeping quent as a police or correction officer may worsen the situation thus causing an ethical dilemma. To resolve this, I strongly feel that all misconduct should be reported to the right authority. An ethical argument Victimless crimes such as gambling, drug use, and prostitution should not be taken lightly because they kill morals and values set by the society. For these reasons, I strongly support that they should be taken as criminal offenses. This is because legalizing activities such as drug and substance abuse subject the current generation to criminal acts such as stealing, killing, or raping (Pollock, 1998). However, issues such as prostitution can be legalized because sex workers earn their daily bread through prostitution. However, it is agai nst the societys ethical considerations. Is morality relative?Morality is said to be relative and not absolute (Parkinson et al., 2011). Morality is taken to be relative because based on the morals set by the society, individuals make a choice on what to do and what not to do depending on the personal code of moral conduct. However, not all moral values set by society is correct; some morality is senseless and vague. Although we learned our morality from our parents, religious beliefs, political environment, and social groups not all values are correct. As a result, most of the people are believe that they have sufficient and clear knowledge about morality without analyzing the subjects; this call for the cultural preference to outweigh the issues of universal morality (Harsanyi, 2006). For example, countries that kill women after committing adultery, homosexuals, exercise force marriage, and encourage polygamy should be intervened by the culture. The cultural practices have a right to face these beliefs because they contradict with the ethical values. Example of an ethical dilemmaI was getting out of a hotel one night during my night shift for a break. I was shocked to notice one of my fellow workmate who was off-duty completely intoxicated and trying to drive his car. I asked, Friend let me know that you are not driving. He replied abruptly, "yes I am driving." Driving when the drunk is illegal but this was my workmate and a good friend. How can I report his to the authority? However, to solve this dilemma I approached this guy and warned him no...

Trevor Taylor Scope of International Relations - 2773 Words

Trevor Taylor (1979) defines International Relations as a discipline, which tries to explain political activities across state boundaries. Scope of International Relations It is known by now that international relations encompass a myriad of discipline. Attempts to structure and intellectualize it have often been thematically and analytically confined to boundaries determined by data. The core concepts of international relations are International Organization, International Law, Foreign Policy, International Conflict, International Economic Relations and Military Thought and Strategy. International/Regional Security, Strategic Studies, International Political Economy, Conflict/War and Peace Studies, Globalization,†¦show more content†¦One is that our wants and desires are unlimited and the other is that we always go on trying to achieve their maximum satisfaction, even though we realize it well that their complete satisfaction is never possible. Thus the relationship between all units participating in the process of politics is inherently full of conflicts. (b) Conflict differentiated from Disputes: We should not, however, confuse conflict with disputes. Conflict is that state of relationship among the units participating in the process of politics which arises, and continues to exist, from the fact that the wants and desires of those units are unlimited and from the further fact that they regard one another as their rivals. Disputes, on the other hand, arise from specific issues. Thus conflict is abstract and dispute is the concrete manifestation of conflict. Disputes can be counted but conflict cannot be. It can at best be measured in terms of degrees. Whether a group of two or more countries have a large or small number of disputes, depends upon how acute is the state of conflict between them. (c) Conflict is a permanent phenomenon in relations: This state of conflict can at times be more acute and at times less acute but can never cease to exist. Thus conflict is the permanent phenomenon in relations. Bertrand de Jouvenel has rightly pointed out that conflict can never be eliminated from relations and therefore, political disputes are always solved only temporarily. Taking English 1010 Was A Great Experience - 924 Words

Over the past year I had a chance to develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to develop successful paper. Taking English 1010 was a great experience because it prepares students on becoming better writers through college life. Even though this is my second year in college I was unable to take English 1010 the first year, but taking this class truly show me what college professors are looking for when we are ask to write a successful paper. College professors expect every student to be able to evaluate each topic and be descriptive in their essay. I have written more in the past year in this course than I probably wrote throughout high school career. This class made me notice that prewriting really does make a difference in the end result as well as having a peer critique your paper. Instead of writing a quick paper and just handing it in, I was actually forced to take the time out to write a rough draft, read my own work out loud, and revise my work. It helped me make my writing more organized and have a better flow throughout my paper In the future, I will continue to use this method as well as visit the many resource we have on campus that can give feedback what can make my paper better or just checking for grammar errors, spell check, and sentence fragments. The Story Of Walter Wimpwung Who Had A Hard Day - 900 Words

In the story of Walter Wimpwung who had a hard day, he experience different types of behaviors throughout his day. First, he had to listen and follow to an order from his boss. Next, he didn’t speak up during a meeting about the product which he didn’t agree with but just went with the crowd. Lastly, he got tricked into buying a bunch of useless stuff. These types of behavior are very common in our day to day lifestyle because it’s something we have got used to. Behaviors like obedience, conformity, compliance, and a variety of different types of social power are examples of what happened to Walter. During the first incident Walter went through, he had to listen to his boss’s orders to ignore the reports that the product wasn’t safe to the public and just move along from it. Even though he didn’t want to follow that certain order, Walter had to obey and show obedience. Obedience is compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to an other’s authority. Even though it was a bad reason to obey, his boss also had social power called legitimate authority. This means that his boss was in a position of power and had the right to tell his staff to follow a certain order. He could have done that to prevent any problems for the company or just wanted to sell the product and make money regardless of who gets hurt. During his meeting with the other staff, Walter knew it was wrong to sell the product as well as the other members of the group. Without anyone to deviate or go

Free King Henry Viii Essay Example For Students

Free King Henry Viii Essay Henry VIIIOn June 28, 1941 Henry the VIII of England was born. This young man will form his own church. He will succeed to the throne in 1509. He will also marry six women! Something good will happen when he is king, he will unite England and Wales and will also do some bad things like executing people who would not follow his rules. In 1539, the Act of Supremacy declared Henry to be the head of the Church of England. King Henry the VIII of England had a good side and a bad side. Though popular with the people of England and also very talented he had many bad times and many good times for himself. Henry was not only selfish but, also handsome and had a hearty personality, he was also a gifted scholar, linguist, composer, and a musician. He was talented at many sports and was also good with the ladies. Henry was the second son and the third child of his father. Henry the VIII died in 1509, the only reason Henry would become king is because of his brothers, Arthur, death in April of 15 02. Soon after that, Henry would marry his first wife, his brother (Arthurs) widow, Catherine of Aragon. Many wifes would follow after her. During most of his early reign, Henry relied on Thomas Cardinal Wosley to do much of the political and religious activities. Henry soon got tired of his marriage with Catherine of Aragon, so he decides that he doesnt want to be married to her anymore, so he tells Thomas Wosley to talk to the pope so he can divorce Catherine. But, Cardinal Wosley wasnt able to convince the pope, so in 1529 Henry took Wosleys authority away from him. Henry then appointed Sir Thomas More. Henry then got that divorce through Thomas Cramner, that he wanted with Catherine of Aragon and then married Anne Boleyn. Cramner now the Arch Bishop of Canterbury, made Henrys marriage with Catherine void and his marriage with Anne valid. This made the Pope furious. So in 1534, King Henry had the parliament pass a law saying that the king, not the pope, would from now on be the supreme head of the Church of England. Since Henry was now in charge of the Church , he was going to make some changes. He had all the bibles translated into English. He then had all the people take an oath for this law. But Sir Thomas More and, then Cardinal, John Fisher wouldnt accept the religious supremacy of the English monarch, so they were then executed. These changes gradually led to the formation of the Church of England. In 1536, Henry accused his second wife, Anne Boleyn of adultery, so Henry then executed her. A few days after that, he married a young woman by the name of Jane Seymour. Jane Seymour, Henrys third wife, was the mother of Henrys only legitimate son, Jane Seymour died after bearing this certain child. Edward the VI was Henrys only legitimate son. A couple of years after Jane Seymour had died, Henry decided to marry once again. He married a german princess by the name of Anne of Cleaves. In 1540, Henry was told that Anne ..of Cleaves was a beautiful and pretty young woman. So then, when Henry finally saw her he thought she was really ugly. So he then divorced Anne of Cleaves and then beheaded Thomas Cromwell for having tricked him. Being unloyal to God as much as Henry possibly could, he made the decision to marry his fifth wife by the name of Catherine Howard. Catherine Howard was then summarily executed in 1542 for being unchaste prior to marriage with Henry the VIII and for committin g adultery. Henry had only one more wife to go, in 1543 Henry married his sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr. Catherine then survived Henry and then lived on to marry fourth husband. In 1536, during Henry the VIIIs reign, England and Wales were finally united as one country. During the 1280s, after Edward the I had conquere Wales, the Welsh people had revolted several times against the English people, due to Edwards conquer. But, the Welsh people finally accepted the idea of unity with the English people. In the acts of 1536 and 1543, Henry joined both Wales and England under one system of government. When Ireland was made a nation or kingdom in 1541, King Henry then became the king of Ireland. Henry now the king, had many wars with Scotland and France, during 1542 King Henrys troops defeated the Scots at Solway Moss. In 1544, Henrys troops also captured Boulogne-sun-Mer from the French, and then a peace treaty was made when Henry received an indemnity from France in 1546. Henrys wars with Scotland remained indecisive in spite of some small victories. Though he opposed the Reformation, his very own creation of a national church started the real beginning of the English Reformation. On January 28 1547, Henry the VIII of England died in the city of London. Henry was buried in Saint Georges Chapel in the famous Windsor Castle. During the reign of Edward the VI, Henry the VIIIs only legitimate son, the parliament passed many more church reforms. But, then in 1553, Edwards half sister, Mary, the daughter of Catherine of Aragon was a Roman Catholic, she re established Catholicism as the state religion. .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 , .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .postImageUrl , .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 , .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6:hover , .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6:visited , .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6:active { border:0!important; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6:active , .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6 .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udb6d5f56471ce730bf4f66b7782650a6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Personal Story of a High School Student EssayEven though Henry altered the Church, he did not even wish to introduce Protestant doctrine. Those people who refused to accept the Church of England and its teachings were executed. The only important religious changes made during his reign were the licensing of an English translation of the Bible, the issuance of Cramners litany and the translation of English of certain parts of the traditional service. In conclusion, Henry the VIII of England was not only a talented fellow and a rich one at that. But, he was also disloyal to God and made many mistakes at that. Making the Church of England was probably his greatest achievement as the King of England. Forcing people to follow a certain religion and do what he told them to do was one of his lowest achievements. Henry the VIII was not only selfish, wealthy man but a horrible ruler and a big sinner.

Effects of drinking Alcohol free essay sample

The Effects of Drinking Alcohol Alcohol also known as ethanol contains high amounts of intoxicating supplements that are very dangerous to the body. If consumed in high amounts or at a young age, it can severely damage parts of the body such as the liver, brain, and it can eventually lead to death. If people are not careful they can become addicted to alcohol, due to it being classified as a drug. Most young adults, aging from fifteen to twenty, do not take their first drink out of their own free-will but from peer pressure. Blood in the body has to go through the liver before circulating throughout the rest of the body. Therefore, consuming a large amount of alcohol over a period of time can lead to three different types of liver conditions: fatty liver, hepatitis, and cirrhosis. Fatty liver is a build-up of fat within the liver cells that occurs from drinking alcohol heavily, but can simply be reversed by lowering the amount of intake. We will write a custom essay sample on Effects of drinking Alcohol or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Fatty liver is not serious but if the right precautions are not taken, hepatitis can develop. Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver, which can leave a person feeling sick, have confusion, go into a coma, bleeding into other organs, and cause jaundice (yellowing of the skin). Cirrhosis, the worst of the conditions, is where normal liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue. The scar tissue affects the normal structure and regrowth of liver cells, is irreversible, and can be fatal. Alcohol has many short-term affects and a few long-term effects on a person’s brain. A few short term affects include: difficulty walking, slowed reaction time, slurred speech, blurred vision, and impaired memory. These are usually noticeable after a few drinks and can easily be resolved when the drinking stops. On the other hand, the long term effects on the brain handicap an individual even after they have sobered up. A few factors that can determine the extent of what alcohol can do to the brain are: a person’s age, gender, general health, level of education, and how much and how often a person drinks. The main long term affects are blackouts and memory lapses. A blackout can occur when someone drinks too much too fast and causes his/her blood alcohol level to rapidly rise. Memory lapses are just moments when you forget something that happened or forget something someone told you  to remember. Both of these effects can cause severe permanent damage to the brain. Drinking causes people to die. This has been a known fact for many years. Rather it be from just a night of drinking where someone decided to get in a vehicle and drive, drank too much and died from alcohol poisoning, or died after years of drinking from health problems. Fifty-five percent of all automobile crashes involves a drunk or impaired driver. Around 5,000 people die from alcohol poisoning each year. The worst part is that these numbers are increasing every year mainly because alcohol is so easily accessible to underage people. Although alcohol is legal to purchase, that doesn’t mean people should abuse it. Bars and clubs are the main factor for underage drinking. This is because bars are the easiest place for teens to obtain alcohol and get away with drinking. If every state would make the age limit to twenty-one and older for entrance into a club or bar, we would see a dramatic drop in deaths from alcohol.

Plans by Death Cab for Cutie free essay sample

Death Cab for Cutie’s album â€Å"Plans† is perfect for any teen that loves alternative music – or doesn’t. The lead vocalist, Ben Gibbard, sings to our generation. The songs are easy to relate to if you’re a teen with an inspired heart. I fell in love with Gibbard’s smooth, captivating voice within one iTunes preview of a song. Unlike what I refer to as â€Å"pop garbage,† the songs included in this album are meaningful and intriguing. When listening to the lyrics alone, the songs sound like beautiful pieces of poetry. I have a very hard time choosing a favorite song, but I have to say my top two are â€Å"Soul Meets Body† and â€Å"Someday You Will Be Loved.† These songs in particular spoke to my heart, and helped me escape from my life if only for a while. Music should make you feel something; this album does more than that. A comparative essay between the novels Artemis Fowl and The princes and the goblin.

A comparative essay between the novels Artemis Fowl and The princes and the goblin. The elements of comparison that immediately come into focus when there is mention of the book ‘princess and the goblin’ and ‘Artemis fowl’ range widely. The variance of themes span from the essentials that describe a society such as food, clothing, money and the fundamentals that describe a place such as its geographical landscape or terrain. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on A comparative essay between the novels â€Å"Artemis Fowl† and â€Å"The princes and the goblin†. specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The landscape at the heart of the story in the book ‘princess and the goblin’ is a mountainous terrain that has very many subterranean hollows. Winding caves and caverns characterize the landscape in this book. Some of the caverns have water coming out of them, while some shine when light gets inside these structures. In this book, two characters of very distinct ba ckgrounds and with very different lifestyles get to interact, and end up being friends. The two come from the two different social groups that define the living standards of the region. Irene, the princess, born of the king and therefore enjoys every ounce of leisure life could offer. She has spent her life enjoying the comfort of the palace built by his father on one of the mountains. The palace is beautiful and it is what the princess has grown up to believe is the whole world, until her curiosity leads her out of the palace into the outside world beneath. There are seemingly a different type people beneath the palace, strange people who it seems have different lives, and are of a different race, these are the goblins. Legends attribute their existence to the fact that they all lived together in the same kingdom, until the king levied upon them higher taxes, tried to impose more severity, and handled them with stricter rules. As a result, these people escaped from the kingdom, b ut instead of going far away from the kingdom, they sought refuge in the underground caves and caverns from where they came out only at night (Macdonald, 1990). The tale has it that these people hardly walk in groups, they come out only in the dark and never show up to large groups of people. This tale goes on to say that they operate in large groups of people in the areas of the mountain that are least visited, deeper into the mountain and that they even gathered in the open air. As a result of them hiding away from the sun, dwelling in the cold and dark dungeon that was the mountain, their bodies had changed greatly both in form and texture through the course of time. They looked abnormally strange to the extent that no literary genius could put to pen the matching description of their appearance. Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? They had advanced intellectually to the point that they could do things that were unheard of in the world of mortals, yet all this creativity they dedicated to making the life of the people living on top of the mountain a living hell (Macdonald, 1990). This community was very cruel to the people living on the mountain (suns), but they treated others of their type with affection and love. Their wits saw them establish a government run by a chief. The main business of this government besides running their own personal affairs was devising trouble for their neighbors on the mountain (Macdonald, 1990). They held onto the grudge they bore against the suns people with a passion, they professed it with a near religious zeal; their perception of the suns was negative. They viewed them as the people who occupied their former abodes, and more so as the descendants of the king who caused their expulsion from the mountain. For this reason, the princess had never seen the sky at night the whole of her life. Also at the heart of this kingdom is a young girl called Irene, she happens to be the king’s daughter; the princess. On one, boring, rainy day she decides to take a stroll through their old huge kingdom house. Due to the complexity of the structure of the house, she gets lost in the rooms and wanders her way into her great grandmother’s secret room. Her grandmother been living beneath their house for ages and therefore knows a lot about the kingdom, yet the occupants of the kingdom didn’t know she was there. She is stunningly beautiful for a grandmother and Irene soon bonds with her. Upon returning to the castle, she tells her nanny Lootie about her encounter with her grandmother, an assertion to which Lootie does not believe and a quarrel ensues. On the first sunny day, they set out for a walk and stay out late. This is their first encounter with the scary gobli ns, but they are saved by a young boy called Curdie, who sings rhythms which the Goblins find unbearable and they leave the two alone. Curdie has saved their lives and Irene promises him a kiss but Lootie interrupts. This marks the beginning of a relationship that would go along way affecting the lives of the people around them, at one point even the fate of the kingdom. This happened when they boy eavesdropped on some goblins and heard them talking and planning an attack on the suns kingdom. He also got to know that their heads were hard but the lower parts of their bodies were weak (Macdonald, 1990).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on A comparative essay between the novels â€Å"Artemis Fowl† and â€Å"The princes and the goblin†. specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Artemis Fowl is a book based on the story of a young boy living with his mother. The father, who happens to be a crime lord, has deserted the family and they are the only members. This boy, at only twelve ears was intelligent, a genius for that matter and had the determination, zeal and desire to be rich. In his quest to attain wealth, he conducts an extensive research on fairies and discovers their existence. He hatches out a plan to kidnap a fairy, this involves trailing them and learning their ways. Artemis and his friend, Butler track down a rogue fairy pretending to be a healer in Vietnam, they intend to get from her the ‘book of the people’, a holy book for fairies that is written in gnomish. At the same time, a police captain Holly short happens to be going after another troll which has escaped from the fairy city deep underground from the earth’s surface. (Colfer, 2001) Captain Holy is assisted by her friends and they debilitate the troll, this exercise consumes all of her magical ability, forcing her to carry out a sacrament that would help bring back her magic. Using his wits, Artemis trans lates the book using a computer, and while at it he learns the essentials of the ritual. From the details in the book, they locate over 100 places where the ritual could be conducted. Four months later they find Holly on the spot conducting the ritual, they tranquilize him with a hypodermic syringe. The Fairy council sends a group of fairies to examine Fowl Manor. The members are equipped with a special ability that allows them to travel faster than the human eye can follow, this was called shielding ability, but Artemis expects this and installs a camera that could resonate with their speed by freezing the image. Butler debilitated the threat while Root cordoned Fowl Manor by initiating a time stop and entered discussions (Colfer, 2001). The amount demanded to release Fowl manor was 24 carats of gold. Artemis, armed with the knowledge he gained from decoding the book, took the chance to disclose his ability to undo the time stop. Following Artemis guidance, they break into the Ma nor. He digs underground to get to the house and finds a safe where a copy of the book was stored. This gives a hint to where Artemis got his knowledge about fairies. In the meantime, Holly digs a space through the concrete wall of her cell, gets an acorn that had been smuggled inside. She takes it and completes the ritual, this enables him to regain his magic and he sets off to the main house. The fairies honor their end of the bargain and give Artemis the ransom they had initially agreed upon. They give him the gold, but in the face of all that and coupled with all the riches bestowed upon him, he cannot cure his mother’s condition. He requests holly to grant him a wish; he wants her to cure his mother’s insanity, which had been caused by the loss her husband’s disappearance (Colfer, 2001). As result she is bed ridden. Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In return Holly offers to grant the wish and cure her mother’s insanity but at a price, he demands to be given half the gold Artemis had. The fairies had other intentions, they intended to kill Artemis by infecting him with a biological bomb and get the gold, but this flops when Artemis drugs himself and his comrades with sleeping pills. The sleeping pills enable him to escape the time-stop, when he wakes up he finds his mother’s health in top condition, having recovered from her insanity. In both stories, there is a common theme that comes to light. A theme that has been a factor in both instances, it has also been the driving force behind most of the events in these books. This is money. Because of money the goblins were expelled from the kingdom that they rightfully belonged, one that was rightfully there’s. The king used it to expel them from the kingdom by raising the tax rates imposed on them, purposefully in order to get rid of them. Money has caused the re to be division and classification according to how much one had, them that lacked had to escape the kingdom, and moved to inhabit the subterranean dungeons. As a result of the limited exposure to the sun and other environmental factors, they had grown scarily grotesque. This had caused all the difference in the lives of these people, hence the contrasting lifestyles. The people who had money lived and enjoyed their lives, though they were not at peace wherever they were, its like they lived in total seclusion, in that some of them had never seen the sky, let alone know. They were confined in their freedom, and did not even know the beauty and glory that lay beyond the confines of their kingdom. In Artemis’s case, the quest for money and wealth almost caused him his life were it not for his intelligence and ability to see ahead and think faster than his adversaries. The biological bomb they had sent him kills all forms of organic life, and his life, however bright was no ex emption. After outwitting them all and having amassed all that wealth that was to the tune of twenty four gold carats, he discovers he still has needs that the money can not buy. The money cannot buy him happiness; it cannot repair the broken relationships, it can neither heal illnesses nor better them, and certainly too much of it does feel uncomfortable. It surprises us at the end when he gives out half the amount of gold he had worked so hard to attain, but what is all that when the person who is closest to you, your mother, is still sick? It surpasses logic. He did it out of the love, it is what matters most and that is what counts. He was happy eventually when the mother recovered, and he still had half the gold. In the case of the kingdom, this people harbored anger and scorn towards each other. The goblins were so cruel to the suns to the point the established an own government whose sole purpose was to create disturbance and mayhem to the suns people. Money had caused this problem, the goblins wanted to attack the sun people, and submerge their kingdom as a result of the hate they had for the suns (MacDonald.1992). This is salvaged after a boy overhears their conversations and alerts the suns . The get ready to protect the kingdom so by the time the goblins attack, they defend. These two, Irene and Curdie, save the kingdom not for the money but because of the love and the indifference of heart they saw among the people of the two communities. In both cases, money has been of utmost disservice to the peace that has existed. Whenever the characters considered money as a factor, there was division and war. Money has proved its ability to buy almost anything that has economic value, but it has failed to buy virtues upon which good life is based upon, such as love, peace and harmony. It happens that people who have all the money don’t have it all when it comes to these virtues; instead money cultivates greed, envy, war and instability in the case of kingdoms and power centers. Money could not buy the suns people the peace they so yearned for, neither could it heal Artemis mother of her condition. He had to make a wish to the Fairy, it is only because the fairy had been frustrated by Artemis that he decided to punish him by charging him half the gold he had. Artemis needed joy and happiness, and he could stop at nothing to get it, his only joy was his mother’s well-being, and he reaped the fruits when he sacrificed half his wealth. His mother was well, the other kingdom was rescued after the money factor was put aside and they all lived happily ever after. Colfer, Eion. (2001). Artemis Fowl: Artemis Fowl series. NY. New York. The Investor Life Cycle of ZipCar, Facebook, and Dunkin Doughnuts Coursework

The Investor Life Cycle of ZipCar, Facebook, and Dunkin Doughnuts - Coursework Example Zipcar, Facebook and Dunkin Doughnuts are companies operating in different industries, and therefore attract different investors in varying stages of the Investor Life Cycle. The four-stage investor life cycle includes the following: accumulation, consolidation, spending, and gifting. According to Hartung (2014), the growth of social networking giant on the back of increasing demand for social media would make the company’s stock idea for the individual who intends to accumulate. The basic notion behind this stage in the investor life cycle is that investors seek to aggressive growth for the future hence this is a fit beyond doubt. On the other hand, Krantz (2014) opines that Dunkin Doughnuts is a stable prospect for the future. Therefore its stocks fit perfectly within the second stage, as that stage typically asserts that an investor would be inclined to who perceive retirement planning as more vital, and hence, these stocks would fit perfectly into their bill. Zipcar’s continued dwindling fortunes in the market and recent mergers news would make its stock a perfect bill for an investor within the investor’s life cycle known as gifting (Savitz, 2013). In this phase, investors are more prone to have assets remaining at the end of their lives, but they focus more on estate planning. According to Burton (2013), calendar effects have emerged as a vital aspect of behavioral finance amongst present investors in the country. Calendar Effects implies that people analyze specific dates and periods in which stock prices to rise. This is absurd, but Wall Street research over the few years has validated this claim.
